ABOUT THE KID CAMERA PROJECT COLLABORATION WITH ReThink
The New Orleans Kid Camera Project has had the pleasure of working with Rethinkers (kids and organizers) over the past few months. Specifically, we have been providing photography instruction to
participants with an interest in the arts. We offer students tools and skills to document their experieces as well as to express their impressions and visions through the power of visual storytelling.
The photographs taken by the Rethinkers will be included in a book, accompanied by essays about their school experiences before and after Hurricane Katrina, and their visions for a better education system.
ReThink OVERVIEW
Rethink, short for Kids Rethinking New Orleans' Schools, is comprised of kids and mentors who are deeply concerned and engaged in rebuilding New Orleans. The young people, mostly middle schoolers, use art, film, writing and media events to share their visions for quality education in New Orleans. All involved are campaigning to make sure students have a voice in the renewal of public education.
The goal is "to have kids tap into the power of their own experiences," says Jane Wholey, a media consultant and founder of Rethink, "then tell their stories at public events like news conferences. In this way, they also tap into the hearts of adults who hear and see them. We adults need kids to constantly remind us about the problems in our schools. Otherwise they are unlikely to change.
The Rethinkers so far have held one major news conference and have made numerous speeches as far away as Massachusetts.
According to one Rethinker, Lucy Tucker, "Of all the people of New Orleans, I think the kids are the right ones to decide how the public schools need to change. We are the ones taught in the schools - not the adults. We know what needs to change because we go through it every day. We understand."
